A quick update after starting my two targeted meds

I started Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, last week and Kisqali two days ago. These two work together to treat the type breast cancer that has spread to my bones.

MEDICAL JOURNEY

I'm including two photos from my backyard yesterday and today. It's an especially pretty time of year, and I'm enjoying the colorful leaves and crisp temperatures.

And I'm grateful for the two medicines that are targeting the breast cancer that has spread to my bones. I'm taking an aromatase inhibitor (letrozole) along with an oral medication (Kisqali) that is a lot like intravenous chemotherapy. But it's targeted rather than systemic. Meaning it's going only to the cancer itself and working there instead of wiping out everything that is fast-growing.

I had particularly nasty IV chemo 14 years ago with the first breast cancer. That cancer was an aggressive type, so my oncologist hit it with what they call the "red devil" plus another type of chemo —as well as radiation. That's not the cancer that returned.

My bone biopsy a couple of weeks ago identified the cancer that has spread as the second type I had three years ago.

This one can be treated with a targeted therapy instead of a systemic one. And for that I'm very grateful.

The Kisquali can have concerning side effects, so I'll be having bloodwork regularly to keep an eye on my kidneys and liver and heart. Kisqali can mess with the heart's electrical polarity. Regular EKGs will be a part of the monitoring. Kisqali can also have other side effects that are much like those of IV chemo, but not as severe.

So far the only side effect I'm aware of is a little nausea from the Kisqali. Compared with the nausea I had with IV chemo, this is very tolerable. I've only taken three doses, so that nausea might improve.

As with everything, time will tell.

I'll follow this treatment path and have a scan in three months—all the while hoping and praying that these meds are doing their job.

I'm trusting that they will.

And as always I'm grateful for all of the good energy you send and bring my way. And for prayers.

My sister will be heading home in a week, so I'll be calling on local folks for help. Several of you have already made plans with me and others of you have sent phone numbers so I can contact you. I appreciate ALL of the offers as well as cards that have arrived in my mailbox. And for goodies several of you have sent. Y'all are really coming through to help me in a challenging time.

I feel very blessed to have so much help and encouragement! And to be able to enjoy fall with its lovely weather and beautiful trees and crystal-clear blue skies on sunny days.

Things could be a lot worse!
